Country 95 (CKRY-FM) retains the top spot in Cow Town, and is the only station to end 2014 with double digit ratings. The CBC slipped for the 4th book in terms of share but hangs onto the #2 spot. Newcap’s XL 103 FM (CFXL-FM) is static in 3rd spot, beating out Lite 95-9 (CHFM-FM) the Rogers AC station that looks to be well off their almost 9 share with which they started 2014.
News/Talker AM 770 (CHQR) bounced back and is up 1.5 share points for a strong 5th place. Jack FM (CJAQ-FM) is in 6th spot and is basically static.
The Pattison station CHPK is at the bottom of the pack with a 1.1 share, but it took a while for this format to catch on in Vancouver as well, so this is a station to keep an eye on.

102.3 NOW! (CKNO-FM) has had a great 2014 and finishes the year in the top spot in Edmonton. The CBC (CBX) made it to #2 while 630 CHED slipped back to #3 even though it grew audience.
96.3 Capital FM (CKRA-FM) had a huge book and made it into the 4th slot with an 8.1 which is tied with CISN-FM. Next in line was the other country station on the AM band, CFCW who end the year at #6.
Rock is a format that is in trouble and that was evident in Edmonton as a number of stations lost audience share including Newcap’s K-Rock (CIRK-FM), Rawlco’s Up! 99.3 (CIUP-FM) and the Rogers Modern Rocker, Sonic (CHDI-FM). But the biggest loser was The Bear (CFBR-FM) who dropped to a 3.9 share and slipped to the 13th spot in Edmonton. Look for some big changes in this market in 2015.

Bell must be very happy as CJAD again took the #1 slot in the Montreal Anglo ratings, and extended its lead by 6 points over the #2 station. Almost 1 in every 4 people in Montreal listen to this monster news talk station.
Cogeco’s 9-2-5 The Beat (CKBE-FM) stays at #2 ahead of Bell’s Virgin Radio 96 (CJFM-FM) who dropped over a point to remain at #3.
The Classic Rocker CHOM-FM stayed in its normal 4th spot but also lost audience. Rounding out the 5th spot and up slightly is the CBC (CBME-FM).

CHFI remains the most listened to station in Canada’s largest city. A full 3 share points behind is CHUM-FM which only just made it into double digits, but at least they end the year a little closer to CHFI than they have been in some time.
CBC came in at #3 but lost some audience. Bell will be happy with results they got with CFRB which managed to pick up over 2 share points to finish the year at #4 which is their best result for some time. Perhaps they benefited from not having either of the Ford brothers on the air.
They will also be celebrating at MZ Media as the Classic station (CFMZ-FM) managed to increase audience share and jump 3 slots to make it into the top 5 in Toronto
Next is the Newcap station 97.3 Boom FM (CHMB) that has slipped back almost a point and ranks 6th. They will not be happy at 680 News (CFTR) which actually picked up audience but remained static at 7th.
The ratings gods were not kind to Virgin (CKFM-FM) which slipped 3 places to 8th. Q107 managed to pick up some audience but drooped from 8th to 9th in the market. KISS also had a rough book and just managed to hold onto the 10th slot in Toronto.

The CBC is once again back in the #1 spot in Vancouver. The only other station to make it into the double digits was Bell’s CIQM which had their best showing for 2014 but could only manage #2. The Corus news/talk station CKNW made it to #3 and beat our CFBT which dropped a spot to 4th. Pattison’s country station, 93.7 JRfm (CJJR-FM) picked up audience but remained in 5th spot. CFMI-FM (Rock 101) is 7th place, but drooped a full point which must be a concern for Corus.
Newcap now owns 2 FM’s and 1 AM Vancouver. They quickly blew up Virgin and on 31 March 2014 to become Z95.3 and have picked up some audience and managed 9th just behind Jack FM, the Rogers Adults Hits station. Newcap is the 4th owner to get the keys to what was CHHR-FM (Shore FM) and turned that into CHLG playing “Vancouver’s Greatest Hits.” It’s early days yet for this format, but so far they are not moving the needle.

The war between Facebook and Twitter seems to be heating up again. Facebook has announced some new features and tools to make it easier for people to see what is going on in the world by beefing up the news and trending sections on their social media platform. This is in an effort to close the gap on Twitter which is perceived to be the platform to send out breaking news.
These changes that Facebook are making may create an opportunity for broadcasters to get more of their news stories read and exposed to a greater audience. Broadcasters will also be able to see the big stories breaking on Facebook both locally and beyond. Facebook believes that stories will be able to be broken faster and exposed to a greater number of people than ever before.
Also look for some new search tools on the mobile Facebook site in early 2015 that allows users to dig deeper and explore more details about a particular story.
Facebook hopes these changes will create more engagement and expose their advertising as more people spend longer periods of time on Facebook.
Facebook has 1.3 billion users while Twitter has about 285 million, so Facebook is still the way to go to reach a larger audience. But Twitter says it has more influence because people want to know what leaders, celebrities and brands are saying. Facebook on the other hand positions itself as a way to stay connected with friends and family. They also say that Facebook allows you to find out what is going on in the world and to express and share what matters to people.
