June 22, 2015 – Ottawa-Gatineau – Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC)
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) today released statistical and financial information on the 695 commercial radio stations operating in Canada, and for the radio services operated by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), for the broadcast year ending August 31, 2014.
Revenues have remained relatively stable from the previous year in spite of competition from satellite, online and mobile services. Total revenues for AM and FM stations fell 0.52%, from $1.623 billion in 2013 to $1.614 billion in 2014. These revenues enable commercial radio stations to offer a variety of programming to Canadians, to support established and emerging Canadian talent and to provide employment to over 9,900 individuals.
In the past year, commercial stations have increased their expenditures by $19 million, for a total of $1.27 billion. As a result, profits before interest and taxes (PBIT) decreased from $328 to $299 million, resulting in a decline in the PBIT margin, which went from 20.2% to 18.5%.
Despite additional revenue of $1.1 million from the sale of national advertising on its Espace Musique and Radio 2 stations, total revenues for the 82 radio services operated by CBC decreased by 5.6% to $287.6 million in 2014. This decrease is primarily due to a decline in parliamentary appropriations directed to the public broadcaster’s radio services.
Each year, the CRTC compiles financial data on the Canadian broadcasting and telecommunications industry to produce a series of reports. This year’s report on the radio sector provides data on a national basis and by individual markets, as well as for the 82 radio stations operated by CBC.
Recently, the CRTC released the 2014 financial results for traditional television stations, specialty, pay, pay-per-view and video-on-demand television services, and broadcast distribution companies. Soon, it will release its annual Communications Monitoring Report.
These annual reports allow Canadians to stay informed about the state of the Canadian communication industry and help them participate in the CRTC’s public consultations.
The CBC remains the most listened to radio station in Vancouver for the 3nd book in the row but lost some audience share this time around.
The only other station to make it into the double digits was Bell’s CIQM which also lost some audience but managed to hold onto the #2 slot.
The big mover this time around was Newcap’s Z95.3 (CKZZ-FM) who went up 1.7% and jumped from 7th to 4th. The other station growing more audience is CKNW who went up 1.2% and moved up one position to #3.
Bell’s Virgin Radio (CKBT-FM) dropped one place to 6th and are still short of the 7.9 share they had when the station was branded as The Beat.
CFMI-FM (Rock 101) was about static and dropped from 3rd to 5th while CFOX made some gains, as did
Jack FM and 93.7 JRfm (CJJR-FM). The other Pattison station, The Peak (CKPK-FM) also had another soft book.

Share – Within a central market area, the estimated total hours tuned to that station expressed as a percentage of total hours tuned to Total Encoded Radio. |
Cume (000) – Expressed in thousands, this is the total number of people who were exposed to the stations for at least one minute during the analyzed period. |
Average Daily Universe – The average daily universe for the analyzed period. The universe is expressed as daily averages because it changes slightly daily as the intab changes. |
CHUM FM is back on top in Toronto after several books being behind CHFI. While weekly and daily cume’s look to be healthy, the overall shares for many stations have dropped which is either a PPM wobble (low sample sizes) or may indicate a drop in time spent listening.
There must be some concern at CHFI who lost over 4% of their 12+ audience in one book. Are they becoming too hot musically and driving away the older audience?
CBC is a strong 3rd and had a slight increase. Overall, there were 13 stations who enjoyed audience increase (based on 12+ % share) and 10 stations who lost audience.
One of the big winners in Toronto is the Newcap station (CKBM) Boom 97.3 which jumps 2 slots to hold #4.. Q107 will also be happy to see a 2% share jump but that was only good enough to keep them steady at #9. The Corus sister station CFNY also had a slight increase in audience as did Indi 88 so that battle for the alternative ears continues.
MZ Media (CFMZ-FM) lost audience slipping from 4th to 6th in Toronto. 680 news also lost some audience and dropped a slot to 8th. Other losers this time around included Virgin (CKFM-FM), which had another down book but picked up a slot to make it into 7th in Toronto.

Bell still dominate in the Montreal Anglo ratings and holds onto the top spot again. They control a quarter of all the tuning and have more than 7 share points over the next station.
Cogeco’s 9-2-5 The Beat (CKBE-FM) stays at #2 but lost some audience, perhaps to Bell’s Virgin Radio 96 (CJFM-FM) which remains at solid #3 and picked up the most listeners this time around.
The Classic Rocker CHOM-FM stayed in its normal 4th spot and rounding out the 5th spot is the CBC so no changes to positing in the top 5 this time around.

102.3 NOW! (CKNO-FM) is still #1 and picked up some of the audience they appear to have lost in the previous measurement period.
The CBC (CBX) is the only other station to make it into double digits and holds onto the #2 slot even though they have lost some audience share.
The Country battle is still tight, The Corus owned 630 CHED are up one place to #3 but also lost some audience share. CISN-FM pick up audience and one spot to make it to 5th. Next is Newcap’s Country station (CFCW)
Newcap’s 96.3 Capital FM (CKRA-FM) dropped a place to #4 and lost 1.5% audience share.
Some shuffling of the Rock stations this time around sees the Bear (CFBR-FM) managed to pick up audience and jump 2 slots for 7th. Next is Newcap’s K-Rock (CIRK-FM) which was static in 8th position.
Rawloc’s Up! 99.3 (CIUP-FM) slips two spots to 10th and the Rogers Modern Rocker, Sonic (CHDI-FM) could only manage 12th in this crowded rock market.
