I remember many years ago, when I first entered the radio business, going to a radio sales seminar. The speaker kept referring to radio as an "appliance." Even being green and very naïve, I found that hard to digest. Radio to me was personality, serving the community, and bringing results to the station's advertisers. I didn't see the similarity between a refrigerator and a radio.

STANDARD RADIO INCOME FUND

Standard Radio Inc. announced today that a preliminary prospectus has been filed with all securities regulatory authorities in Canada for an initial public offering of units of the Standard Radio Income Fund (the "Fund"). The Fund was created to indirectly acquire and hold an interest in SR Limited Partnership ("Standard Radio"), which has been formed to acquire, among other things, certain of SRI's radio broadcasting assets, the shares of Integrated Media Sales Inc. held by SRI, and the business of Sound Source Networks operated by Standard Broadcast Productions Limited.

VEGAS VACATION PRIZE NOT IN BREACH

The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) today released its decision concerning a CJOB-AM (Winnipeg) “Spin to Win” contest that took place on September 30, 2005. The offer was of “a trip for two to the entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas, including luxury hotel accommodation.” A contestant who had called the station on a timely basis and had won the trip for her and her husband complained that the station was unable to co-ordinate convenient dates, had not properly or fairly concluded the arrangements for the contest and that, in effect, “the station [had] participated in a promotion with no apparent prize available.”

State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer today announced a settlement with UMG Recording Inc., ("Universal") the world’s largest record label company, to end its pervasive "pay-for-play" practices. Under terms of the settlement, Universal, a subsidiary of Vivendi Universal which owns Island Def Jam, Interscope, Universal Motown Recordings Group, Uni-South, Universal Nashville and Verve, has agreed to stop making payments and providing expensive gifts to radio stations and their employees in return for "airplay" of particular artists’ songs.

O.K. Radio Group Ltd. and The Jim Pattison Broadcast Group today jointly announced that O.K. Radio Group Ltd., based in Edmonton, Alberta and Victoria, B.C. has agreed in principle to sell its two market-leading radio stations (and related assets) to the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group. REVENUES/PROFITS RISE FOR RADIO

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) today released its statistical and financial summaries for Canadian commercial radio. Revenues for Canadian radio stations in 2005 increased by 8.7% over 2004 to 1.3 billion dollars, while profits before interest and taxes (PBIT) experienced a growth of 23.8%, rising to nearly 277 million dollars in 2005. These growth rates exceeded the average rates recorded over the last five years, during which revenues increased at an average rate of 5.7%, and PBIT at 12.8%.

Musexpo opened yesterday morning in West Hollywood, CA with a keynote panel moderated by noted talk host Larry King and including Napster Chairman/CEO Chris Gorog, Universal Music Publishing Chairman/CEO David Renzer, Virgin Records U.S. Chairman/CEO Jason Flom, Starbucks Entertainment President Ken Lombard, Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino and producer and American Idol judge Randy Jackson. King began by asking Lombard about the state of the music industry from Starbucks' perspective. He replied, "It's in a tremendous state of chaos, which has, frankly, presented an opportunity for Starbucks" as it expands its program to expose new music.
