ROGERS SAYS RADIO OK IN ALBERTA

CAB SUBMITS EQUITABLE PORTRAYAL CODE

The CAB submitted its new Equitable Portrayal Code for broadcasters to the CRTC on Thursday, July 20. The Equitable Portrayal Code is intended to replace the Sex-Role Portrayal Code, and was created to ensure the equitable portrayal of all persons in television and radio programming. The new Code comes as the culmination of an extensive review of all existing industry codes, and addresses concerns relating to stereotyping and negative and inaccurate portrayal identified by the Task Force for Cultural Diversity on Television and the report commissioned by the CAB on the presence, portrayal and participation of persons with disabilities in television programming.

FORMER SHOCK JOCK LOSES BID TO BEAT LIBEL AWARD

TERRESTRIAL RADIO STRIKES BACK

Terrestrial radio stations aren't letting satellite take over the airwaves. They're showing signs of striking back.  There's "Jack," the mix-and-match format that's become the hottest trend in terrestrial radio. The format is now available in most major markets, and last year took over New York's venerable oldies station WCBS-FM.

NAB ASKS FOR FM TRANSLATORS FOR AM STATIONS

The NAB is petitioning the FCC to allow AM stations to use FM translators to fill in coverage areas within the AM's 2 mV/m daytime contour or within 25 miles of the station's transmitter. The petition notes AM stations' reception problems from electrical interference and the pending trouble with extending Daylight Savings Time for four additional weeks starting next year, meaning stations which power down at night will experience more weeks of diminished service in drive times.

BROADCAST OF CIVIC ADDRESS IN BREACH

The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) today released its decision concerning the broadcast of a civic address on CKYK-FM (Alma) on October 31 and November 1, 2005.  On Halloween, the station’s hosts announced that a convicted pedophile lived at a particular address in Alma.  They mentioned the street name and number on air that day and again the following morning.  The CBSC Quebec Regional Panel determined that the broadcasts violated the privacy article of the Radio-Television News Directors Association of Canada (RTNDA) Code of (Journalistic) Ethics.

ASTRAL: WE BID ON CHUM, TOO

Canadian media company ASTRAL MEDIA saw fiscal third quarter revenues rise from C$144 to C$155.5 million, helping boost profit from C$29.6 to C$33.2 million (C61 cents/diluted share), and its radio division revenues rose 9% for the first nine months of the fiscal year, but the big revelation on the company's conference call was CEO IAN GREENBERG's comment that ASTRAL had made a bid to buy CHUM LTD. before BELL GLOBEMEDIA made its C$1.7 billion bid on WEDNESDAY.

CRITICISM OF PROGRAM FOR DRUG ADDICTS NOT UNFAIR

The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) today released its decision concerning an episode of Bruce Allen’s Reality Check aired on CKNW (Vancouver) on September 8, 2005.  In the editorial segment, Allen criticized a government program designed to assist drug addicts.  The CBSC British Columbia Regional Panel concluded that the segment did not contain inappropriate remarks about drug addicts contrary to the Canadian Association of Broadcaster’s (CAB) Code of Ethics.

EUROPEAN COURT ANNULS SONY BMG MERGER

A European Union Court has annulled the 2004 merger that was approved between Sony and BMG, sending the deal back to the European Commission for review and re-examination. The Court ruled that the Commission had not adequately established that the major music companies involved in the merger were not practicing collusion on market prices and market access. The suit against the merger was brought by Impala, a Brussels-based group representing independent record companies.

GOOGLE TO START SELLING RADIO ADS

In January 06 Google bought DMarc Broadcasting to help jumpstart themselves into the radio advertisement game. Since then there has not been much news from this side of the business. Today, I received a Google survey for some free adwords dollars. The entire survey was about radio advertisement. I think this is pretty good evidence that they are ramping up on this. Don’t be surprised to see Google selling radio ad spots thru their adwords center in the not to distant future. The last time I got a Google survey, it was about print advertisement, 2 weeks later they revealed it in beta form.

IT'S OFFICIAL-- TAKE-OVER OFFER FOR CHUM

CHUM Limited and Bell Globemedia Inc. today announced that BGM, through a corporation owned by its current and prospective shareholders, has agreed to make an offer to acquire all of the issued and outstanding common shares ("Common Shares") and non-voting Class B Shares ("Non-Voting Class B Shares") of the Company at a cash price of $52.50 per Common Share and $47.25 per Non-Voting Class B Share (the "Offer"). The cash consideration represents a 50.0% premium over the 10-day weighted average trading price of the Common Shares and a 57.0% premium over the 10-day weighted average trading price of the Non-Voting Class B Shares, in each case as of July 11, 2006. The Offer establishes a $1.7 billion enterprise value for the Company.

25-54 DEMO CAPTURES 63% OF RADIO ADVERTISING

A single age demographic, 25-54, continues to grow in dominance, now capturing 63% of all national radio advertising dollars. In the third quarter, the Adults 25-54 demo alone represented almost 50% of spending, an increase of 1.2 share points over the previous year. Adding distinct categories for Women 25-54 (8.7%) and Men 25-54 (4.7%) brings the total age group spend to 63%.
