RECORD PROMOTION… A LOST ART?

Fred Deane – FMQB

Why can’t we all just get along? Okay, let’s get right to the punch line… the government is taking all the fun out of record promotion. Plain and simple! Just when labels thought it was safe to promote directly to radio, along comes an investigation by the New York State Attorney General’s office of epic proportions. The investigation picked up steam early this year, altering a relationship that had already been dramatically reshaped in the preceding twelve to fifteen months by the radio and music industries distancing themselves from independent promotion firms.

CAN RADIO SAVE ITSELF?

Christian Hoopes – Underground Online

Long a friend of truckers, unhappy people in cubicles, and sports talk show hosts, radio was the dominant media of the 20th century, aside from books, movies, TV and the Internet. Radio still exists, though it's finally beginning to morph into XM. Still, as MP3 player sales skyrocket, one has to wonder if radio can save itself, or at least stick around long enough to fill the void in our cars until they can invent some kind of horizontally-shaped auto Pez dispenser.

"SAD DAY IN THE RADIO BUSINESS"

Joe Mandese – Real Media Riffs

That's what we heard from not one, but several people yesterday when it was learned that radio giant Infinity Broadcasting shorted out its research transistors. The truth is that it's an even sadder day on Madison Avenue, because the decision signals that radio - or at least one major radio player - doesn't seem to take the ad industry's push for accountability seriously. Ultimately, that will prove to be a sad next year, or an even sadder year after that for radio broadcasters, as begin receiving a new frequency from the ad community: not the kind for frequency associated with reach, but an increasingly distant and weak signal that will begin to fade as marketers lose faith in the efficacy - and ultimately, the efficiency - of radio as an advertising medium.

RADIO STATION BLOGGING

Tom Webster – Edison Media Research

Recently I attended the Blog Business Summit (BBS) in San Francisco, a gathering of both current and would-be corporate bloggers seeking to enrich their understanding of this hydra-headed beast. If you have dipped your toe into the world of blogging (either personally or commercially) you know that it can be a potentially scary space, with spammers, scammers and crackpots accompanying the lions, tigers and bears. Many of the genre’s current “A-List” bloggers spoke at the BBS and encouraged would-be corporate bloggers to just start blogging—“you’ll figure it out as you go along.” This is actually better advice than it sounds, though you might want to start off with training wheels and airbags by keeping your corporate blog safely tucked away behind your firewall until you are comfortable that you have found your voice and are, indeed, ready to drop your drawers and become a more transparent entity to your customers.

LINK BETWEEN REALITY TV AND MORNING RADIO
